The 10 Best American Dad Episodes

Here's the very best of Stan, Steve, Roger, Francine, Hayley

 and the rest...

Season 8 of American Dad has cemented my views about the show being the funniest animated show to hit television. American Dad first aired in 2005, and while it received average critical reception at first, it has since exploded into a staple on Sunday night’s Fox Animation Domination. While it started out as Family Guy’s red headed little cousin, it has since created its own mass following and has brought itself into the spotlight. Here are the ten best episodes of the show.

10. Season 1 Episode 23 “Tears of A Clooney”

When Francine's birthday brings back haunting memories of a celebrity film moment stolen by George Clooney, Francine's new dream is to destroy the star. But when she tries to win Clooney's heart with the intention of breaking it, Stan actually falls for him and sabotages the plan. Meanwhile, back at home, Roger builds a vineyard and starts up a private sweat shop of foster children. Francine’s seduction of Clooney and Roger’s totalitarianism when dealing with the foster children is pure hilarity.

9. Season 3 Episode 14 “Office Spaceman”

Roger-centric episodes are usually pretty funny, and this episode is no exception. In this ep, Roger releases photos of his alien-himself to the local media for extra cash, forcing the CIA to create an Alien Task Force. Roger ends up in charge of the task force in one of his many disguises, creating tension at home because he’s Stan's boss now. Roger frames Stan as an alien in attempt to keep his identity a secret. Klauss and Roger arguing about Roger’s origin being Moulder’s origin from X Files is one truly funny moment.

8. Season 7 Episode 11 “Old Stan in The Mountain”

A curse is put on Stan after he is overly vocal about his hatred for old people. As a result, he's turned into an old and frail man. Roger takes Francine to a dance competition. Stan’s comments about the elderly are what make the show hilarious. In this episode, Roger has a running gag with Francine, as he keeps saying, “Francine, I haven’t been entirely truthful...” The story-line is wildly amusing, and definitely made me laugh throughout.

7. Season 2 Episode 9 “The Best Christmas Story Never"

In this episode, Stan blames secular non-believers for ruining his favorite religious holiday. With Stan's holiday spirit at an all-time low, the Ghost of Christmas Past visits him and tries to show him the true meaning of Christmas. However, Stan is convinced that Christmas can be saved by changing the outcome of Vietnam, but finds that changing the past only dramatically changes the future. Many people rated this episode higher than Family Guy’s Christmas special that same year. And, there’s dinosaurs...

6. Season 6 Episode 12 “May The Best Stan Win”

An episode that takes us to the future and to the past in the same episode. Francine questions her relationship with Stan when his more romantic cyborg counterpart from the future arrives; Roger directs Steve and his pals in a remake of "The Goonies". Stan from the future is a cyborg, and he returns to warn Stan about the future, and in the process, steals his old wife. One of the funniest moments is when Stan asks his cyborg of the future if he ever truly falls in love (as Francine is standing right there).

5. Season 1 Episode 8 “Bullocks To Stan”

Easily in the top five American Dad episodes of all time. At the 30th Annual CIA Carnival, there’s a defibrilate Dick Cheney booth, where Dick Cheney calls the nurse worthless and hilariously shocks himself. Also at the CIA Carnival is a boring suit contest. Hayley verbally attacks Bullock, and then she ends up in his bed, which clearly surprises Stan. Stan tries to torture toughen up Hayley’s old boyfriend, Jeff, in an effort to pull Hayley away from Bullock. Bullock wearing Hayley’s robe is one of the funniest images in the series.

4. Season 1 Episode 9 “A Smith In The Hand”

When Steve brings home a permission slip to take sex ed at school, Stan flips out and demands to teach it himself. However, after Stan unrealistically explains the birds and the bees to Steve, he gets into an accident that causes him to take matters into his own hands. Meanwhile, Roger becomes a bartender in hopes of making something of himself. Francine gets turned on by spring cleaning. Stan comically calls masturbating “playing a solo on the devil’s clarinet”.

3. Season 7 Episode 1 “Hot Water”

Cee-Lo Green guest stars on this episode of American Dad, in which Stan buys a hot tub for relaxation, but the hot tub ends up being more than he pays for--an EVIL hot tub. The hot tub salesman is hilarious. Cee-Lo voices the talking hot tub, whom persuades Stan to party all the time. The hot tub turns into a killer. What makes this episode one of my favorites is how it just abruptly ends with Stan’s death.

2. Season 7 Episode 18 “Toy Whorey”

Stan becomes concerned with Steve using his imagination as he’s playing with his toys and action figures. Steve’s whiney voice is one of my favorite aspects of the show, and it shines in this episode when he yells “NEVERRRRRRRRRRRRR” after Stan tells him to stop playing with his toys. Stan responds by saying, “You’re a dick, Steve,” which for some reason or another made me laugh hysterically.

1. Season 8 Episode 5 “Why Can’t We Be Friends”

In this hilarious episode, Stan sees Steve and Snot elaborately playing air guitar in his garage. Stan is irritated by their antics and tries to break the pair up. He forbids Steve to hang out with his friend, but the pair keeps playing together, despite Stan’s wishes. Stan devises an elaborate plan to separate Steve from Snot, and then ends up becoming Snot’s new best friend. Stan dressed up in glam-rock is one of the funniest images of the series!
